The RL is available only in a 3.5 trim and it is Acura's flagship model. In the Acura model lineup, the RL is fourth in sales with 15,024 models sold in the United States for 1998. Acura markets the RL to those customers who are looking for a stylish luxury sedan that offers advanced technology and safety features. Priced in the lower 40s the RL offers a long list of standard features with the Acura Navigation System being the only factory installed option available. The RL faces competition from such models as the Volvo S90, Mercedes E-CLass, BMW 3-Series, and Lexus GS300. The RL features several new safety advancements highlighted by the two new safety airbag systems. Newly added to the RL is an advanced side airbag system that has seven built in sensors to monitor the size and position of the passenger which helps determine if it is safe to deploy the airbag. The second system which is an industry exclusive is the dual-stage passenger SRS system which varies deployment of the passenger airbag based on the severity of the crash. The RL is powered by a 3.5L V6 engine and is coupled with a new double-wishbone suspension that provides better handling and performance ability. With all of these advancements Acura claims that the RL is "one of the most powerful and sophisticated luxury sedan in its class". With its redesign for 1999, the Acura RL features a wider stance and a sportier, more stylish body design. Over 300 modifications were made with new standard features being added, such as heated seats, 6-disc CD changer, Homelink System, and rear compartment heating and air conditioning controls and vents.
