1999 Ford Windstar Wagon The Windstar Wagon is Ford's sole entry in the minivan market segment. It has been a consistently good seller since its introduction in the 1995 model year. Squarely aimed at the family market, the Windstar Wagon is promoted by Ford to emphasize its safety features and Low Emission Vehicle (LEV) engine rating. According to Ford's literature, the Windstar is "a minivan safety and environmental leader" which "sets a new benchmark in family transportation". This is the first minivan on the market to feature what Ford calls a Reverse Sensing System. This feature uses sonar to detect objects in the vehicle's path when it is backing up. Warning beeps inside the cabin sound with increasing frequency as the vehicle approaches an object, and become a continuous tone when the object is within 10 inches of the vehicle. The 1999 Windstar is also the first minivan to offer combination head and chest side-impact airbags for the front passengers. For the 1999 model year, the Windstar receives new front and rear styling, and a sliding driver's side door on most models.
